How to apply for a Schengen visa from the UK
If you live in the UK and need a Schengen visa for a short trip, the application follows the same broad stages whichever country you are visiting. Knowing the stages in advance helps you plan your timing and your documents.
The six stages
1. Choose the country to apply through. Your application usually goes through the country where you will spend the most time.
2. Book your appointment. Appointments are made with the visa application centre for that country. Availability can be limited.
3. Prepare your documents. Every application needs a set of supporting documents. The right set depends on your circumstances and the country.
4. Attend your appointment. You submit your application in person. Fingerprints and a photograph may be taken.
5. Wait for a decision. The embassy or consulate reviews your application. See our guide: How long does a Schengen visa take?
6. Receive your decision. If approved, your passport is returned with the visa. If refused, you receive a letter giving the reason.
Where the detail matters
The stages are simple to list. The detail is where applications are won or lost: what your documents need to show, how they should be presented, and what changes from one country to another. That is what our Schengen Visa Guide covers, written for UK applicants.
