How long does a Schengen visa take?
The short answer: usually two to three weeks, but it may take up to 45 days. Under EU rules, the normal processing time is 15 days from when your application is accepted. It can be extended, up to 45 days, if the consulate needs a further examination or more documents.
When the clock starts
The time is counted from when your application is submitted at the visa application centre, not from when you book your appointment. Waiting for an appointment comes before this and is not included.
What can add time
A wait for an available appointment, a request for additional documents, further checks by the consulate, and the time taken to return your passport. Each is outside the official processing time, or can extend it.
When to apply
The rules allow you to apply no earlier than six months before your trip. Appointments can be limited, so it is wise not to leave your application until the last few weeks before you travel. If you book flights or hotels before you have a decision, choose refundable options.
Can the time be shortened?
Not by us. The decision rests with the embassy or consulate, and we cannot speed it up or change the outcome. What you can control is how complete your application is when you submit it.
